Susan,
I have taught at a private school and I personally wouldn't put my high schooler in that, much less public school. Before I taught there, I was consumed with worry over my kids not getting enough from me. When I saw what they get in school, including the peer pressure, negative influences, teachers who don't care, I realized that home would be better.. even if I wasn't fully adequate. I am having my high schooler work independently as much as possible, and in math ,where I am weak, I am using a curriculum which explains things so clearly to the student that I am actually able to understand it myself! Both S.O.T. and Alpha Omega do this. S.O.T. has algebra and geometry videos which do all the teaching. Math-u-See is similar.. the video explains everything. There are language arts programs which teach the student step by step processes in writing- Alpha Omega does this, which I am using for language arts. If your child is asking to be homeschooled, he probably sees his need for it. My students are learning far more with my inadequacies than they did at school- I wished I'd known that before I put them in school. They did receive alot of scars from being in school.
