My Son didn't speak in conversation until 5 1/2 +. Five word constant vocabulary up to age three. "Get" meant around six different things. Depending on time, tone of voice, mood, location. No one could understand him but me. Even Dad was frustrated. So having someone watch or babysit just made it worst for him, myself and the person "trying" to figure out his need. Ten word vocabulary age three-five about twenty total.I went to them all...the professionals. Payed high top dollars for Medical labels and techniques to get my son speaking/learning. Don't misunderstand me, seek professional assessment if you deem necessary.I found out, when he was around three and a half that the system (public school) wanted to program him.Bottom line. He didn't fit the schedule. He didn't work that way. He didn't have language as a tool to survive in the system. It was then I began my journey homeschooling. Age four and a half. That summer, I began researching. It has been the most rewarding, challenging, questioning journey and I am grateful for the opportunity to educate him at his own pace. God Bless America!I was worried about the language delay. That's the key.. delay. There are more labels/delays that the medical professionals would like to attach but I never gave them the opportunity after age three 1/2. There were drugs for his high activity or attention that was recommended. Never was an option! It was then I decided I was going to educate our son at his pace. I never stopped talking, encouraging interaction. My advice:Speak in short concrete words. Three to five word sentence structures. Use their "Name" then say "Time to eat Breakfast." Allow LOTS of time for child to follow response.Go get them if they don't come. And MODEL, MODEL, MODEL.Children with language delays need constant modeling to learn association of the words spoken.Language delay is unique and so individual. By age six he began speaking.Answering simple questions. Remember, You aren't speaking for him you are modeling the behavior, word(s) to be learned. I was so excited for his accomplishment and relieved all at the same time. At age nine he doesn't fit the average child social maturity. And that is perfectly fine.He talks so much now I actually have to ask him to continue working and less talking. He does excel in so many other areas. Strengths and weaknesses. They will be higher at times and lower at other times. You know your child. There is alot of info out here to compare characteristics and levels. there are many scope and sequence materials to follow. Remember the three "r's" reading writing and arithmetic. Check out ABeka Book. They have a website, dvd instruction, motel meetings where you can view their materials. Your child is very young right now enjoy cuddling, laughing, reading aloud, put picture books everywhere!!! Anytime you see him with something, label it-say it. Language is association. Hands on approach. Count to fifty! You will need to I promise! But remember alot of us have experienced some thing of the kind, different totally unique.Be an advocate! He needs your voice for however long. You were blessed with this child, nuture & praise everything they do.Re-direct is so important for language delay. Model everything! Monkey see monkey do,really. Best wishes Joyful proud parent! Jennifer :)
