I have a question regarding job-charts (see message below taken from Lynn's weekly email ). I have been doing this in our family, and it works well (sort of ). I do find that I have to remind the kids to check their chart. I find this a pain. When will they assume responsibility for their charts ? I offer a reward for five days fully completed - a small prize from the dollar store. I offer a bigger prize for seven days fully completed. The only times they get the five day prize is when I remind them each day to check their charts ! They have never had a seven day prize.

John Holt says in his books that motivation for doing such tasks should be internally motivated, and not external. So prizes are external, but how does one work towards internal motivation ?

Sharing Family Responsibilities

I just wanted to take a minute and share a fun family
"organization" project we have started in our home. We are a family with 3 children, soon to be 4 and there are some days Mom (me) feels like she is the servant of all, despite our efforts to stress everyone does their part. Well this week has been like a dream. Step one was to purchase inexpensive charts from our local education store. On these charts we listed the expected
responsibilities of each child (they have their own, obviously modified for our 4 year old..lol) ie: bed made, clothes laid out, hair brush , room picked up Am and PM, teeth, things that are specific for each child ( a trouble area) well you catch my drift. They put a stamp, sticker, star for each completed day....
Well also have on there a special one called "Ice Cream Jobs". Which correlates with a FUN Looking Ice cream truck Poster/ Job Board, these list the jobs that they help with around the house (Bathrooms, Kitchen helper, Vacuuming, Laundry helper, Trash, dusting ) They are assigned 2 on the board with an adult helper( mom or dad who else). Each day they work a little on their "Ice
Cream Job"...ie: Vacuum helper chooses one room a day to vacuum, Kitchen helper is Mom's right hand person that week in the kitchen. It has been a great change... It takes a little discipline on our (Mom and Dad's part) and overseeing, but it has been WONDERFUL... When their star chart is filled there will be a special event, whether a movie they want to see or a trip to the zoo or Natural Science Center....Anyway its like the kids were waiting for added responsibility to thrive in!!!!! Just thought I'd pass the idea along (even though not new) in case
you were suffering the "MOMMY Martyr Syndrome. - MaryBeth
