I am exploring the homeschool optiions for my 8th grader see below: I currently have a son in public school in 8th grade "strong" advanced learner. I am thinking of homeschooling him after the first half of the year is completed. He is currently in geometry , Latin 2 and advanced Lang.Arts where he is given 22 vocab words/week the teacher says are common on the SAT. This is a very rigorous course load but he has tons of "busy work" often 2-3 hours of homework. If I knew I could stimulate him at the level the AL program can I would be thrilled to switch to homeschooling. Has anyone had a similar experience??
I have a few concerns. It seems like alot of homeschooled families in my area think their kids are "ahead" because they are doing 9th or 10th grade geometry. To get in a good university higher rigorous courses make a student competitive. I am not a Math whiz (lots of praying and short term memorization for college math when going for my Nursing degree helped me) However my son is gifted academically in higher Math. I worry I am hurting him more than helping but He & I can do witout the 2+hours of homework every night as well as ongoing busy work projects!
