My husband was very similar in his feelings, (lack of support and "send them to public school like everyone else"). I decided (from the advice of our President of our small local homeschool group), to go to our State Convention for homeschoolerse, with my husband. Its a three day weekend of topic talks of various homeschool techniques and ideas, plus a book fair (to look at curriculum ideas). Just by see the sheer number of people that attended this once a year event.. my husband felt less alone with the "new idea" idea of homeschool. Now, it appeared there were numbers of people of people who didn't send their kids to public school "like everyone else.
Its a fun weekend to get away with your husband (beside the benefits of the homeschooling goodies). If anything, you both deserve a nice weekend away alone, and it convinced my husband to partner homeschooling our children WITH me. Hes my biggest supporter NOW!
Good luck.. it just might work.. I didn't think it would and IT DID!
