I have had similar problems with my son. He is now 3 1/2 and I have tried to potty train him 3x. I even used the book "Potty Training in 24 hours" and got wonderful results until he realized that I wanted him to poop on the potty. Then he refused to go on it all together! He went from urinating on the potty and being happy about his progress to peeing on the floor and screaming when I suggested he go on the potty.
I was told to just back off. That it was a boy thing. My daughter never did this. I have been using pull ups instead of diapers so that he doesn't feel like he went backwards, but it is getting old real fast. I keep introducing the topic and recently I finally got him to say that he would try it, but he doesn't want to NOW.
My son also had a bad bout with constipation several times. He tries not to go even in the pull up! I kept telling him it was ok to go in the pull up and now he will, but he wont do it in the potty.
I feel that soon I will be able to talk him into it. My nephew had the same problem and so did a friend of mine's sister's son. Again, I was told it was a boy thing. I was told that usually by 4 or so they will decide it is better to potty and poop than never to potty at all!
