My 8 1/2 year old daughter also does this. It started back when she was 2 years old and recently potty trained. The Dr. said that most likely she'd had one BM that was hard to pass or maybe hurt, so the next time she held it. Well, she held it frequently until she ended up with an enlarged colon. This is NOT good! 6 years later we are still dealing with the bowel leakage, changing underwear many times a day. She'll feel the need to go, then head for the bathroom only to return saying she couldn't go. Well this goes on for days at a time and then she'll have a HUGE BM and the cycle will repeat several days later. We've done fiber (it takes a LOT of fiber), she has seen a pediatric urologist (they also handle these type of problems too) etc. All I can say is try to get this resolved before he ends up with physical problems that don't ALLOW him to have regular bowel movements. It really can be a huge problem and very uncomfortable at times. Several times she's had terrible belly aches, bloated with gas and can't go to the bathroom. Sometimes that can go on for hours and she cries and it's really no fun for anyone. I would see about going to a ped. urologist now, rather than waiting for later.
