Hi,
I do not recommend Saxon Math for the younger student, but it you do choose to use Saxon it is best that if you start to use it when they are young you should stick with Saxon throughout.
I believe Saxon isn't the easiest of some math books to understand. Math comes pretty easy to me, thereby giving me an edge to choose a well-explained method to teach my 4th grader. Saxon is complicated and doesn't give enough thorough explaination and it's boring. Math should not be boring it's difficult enough for some children.
I recommend http://abeka.com books for younger children and Rod and Staff publishers textbooks (all courses)for grades 3rd and up. You can reach Rod and Staff at 1-606-522-4348 for a free catolog.
Rod and Staff is very biblical based, but if you are not a Christian, I recommend abeka books.
Go to your states bookfair for homeschoolers. There you will find a wealth of information.
