Sign-on Letter to Support Dr. David Underhill
On or about March 24, 2004, Dr. David Underhill was fired after callers took issue on the air with Mobile City Councilman, Steve Nodine, also candidate for County Commissioner District 2. Councilman Nodine on March 23, 2004 proclaimed on the air that Dr. David Underhill should be fired. Dr. David Underhill is a professional journalist, talk show personality, author and supporter of the community’s right to know.
“The Bay Today and the World Beyond” show programming was changed to the “Ron and Dave Show,” approximately two years ago and now, is known as the Ron and Kathy show. Moreover, pressure was continually placed on Dr. David Underhill for the 2 years prior to his termination to ensure that the “revised” format under management’s planning, and policies regulations, were believed to be according to the wishes of politicians. Over these two years, the management according to Frasier on-air-testimonies also deemed it permissible that Frasier and others call Dr. David Underhill an idiot, moron, and many other derogatory names on the air, in addition to being mistreated, talked about, cheated, and finally, Terminated!
Dr. David Underhill was responsible for developing the three hour show after six years and allowing people to speak who would not have been allowed to be heard on public forum under other circumstances, and who would have been viewed as unwanted callers- depending on programming format or pre-caller screening. David’s on air philosophy and intention was: “Not to stifle, not to ridicule, not to deflect, reject or neglect but to welcome guests, callers, ideas and information that would otherwise be absent from talk radio.”(It was not unusual to here you heard it first hear on the Bay Today.)
Dr. Underhill, the recipient of the Sierra Clubs Alabama Chapter Mobile Bay Group Radio Talk Show Activist award – received for getting environmental issues out into the public in November 2003 - was terminated from WABB at the end of March 2004!
Each of you are now asked to ensure viability of Dr. David Underhill’s Free Speech Principles under the Management of WABB Inc. as threatened by Candidate for County Commissioner District 2, City Councilman Steve Nodine. Even though rating indicators are misrepresented to shortcut this goal, the callers and listeners of the show have, for the most part, found that most every other format has failed to take on thought-provoking issues. And more failed to allow the population of listeners to extrapolate data that informs the public, and identifies factors affecting the community.
As a result, WABB Inc. and other media groups’ public forum projects have been halted, while the forces of propaganda have silenced informed individuals in the community. Many media organizations try to establish adequate public forums, monitoring procedures, and collect required data to disseminate information to the public for live discussion on a national -not local- level.
In letter, emails and phone calls to the station, a flood of response has come from regular callers and supporters. But the truth is misrepresented to them. The firing was reported by the station to have been the result of a “reduction” in news personnel.
Please consider signing on to this letter requesting that WABB Inc. ensure the planning regulation revisions, under which the staff has significant purview, not undermine the principle of free speech data and trend determination requirements which includes Dr. David Underhill’s concept of Talk show fairness.
To write your opinion about what has happened click, Where’s Dave or call 251-433-2442 for on air comments Monday through Friday from 6:00 am until 9:00 am and discuss it on the air. You may write a letter to: WABB Complaint Department
1551 Springhill Ave.
Mobile, AL 36604 Telephone Numbers
Talk Line 251.433.2442
Main Office 251.432.5572
Our intent is to raise the profile and understanding of the Talk Show requirements, to establish the forthcoming planning regulation revisions, and to return Dr. David Underhill to the air and ultimately help make publication of FCC unfriendly revisions a political liability for future politicians.
We plan to submit a letter in the near future to the station, and to have some media contacts on it as well. Please direct your sign-on letter responses to support Dr. David Underhill to Jeffery at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at (251) 452-0342. Please include your name, title, organization name, and state.
I also urge you to e-mail asking for your help to keep pressure on the FCC and encourage them to take action to stop the progressive elimination of our 1st Amendment rights.
We must prepare for the worst and assume that the propaganda-generating machines sponsored by groups working to stop provocative subjective vs. objective thoughts in public forum - will not suspend our campaign until they are forced to discuss the truth. Dr. David Underhill needs the help of grassroots leaders and individuals like you to respond to the deceitful action taken against him and his First Amendment rights. There may be different opinions, but many have had actions taken against them to prohibit their individual constitutionally protected First Amendment rights – especially on the air.
I hope we can count on your support.
