Yes, bellybands are safe & humane. They should not, however, to be used for training, but merely as a sanity/furniture saver. It is very dog dependent, some will wet it once and realize that it's wet & yucky and won't ever wet again while it's on. Others could care less and pee with it on anyway and, in those cases, you need to put a pad inside to absorb the urine. I have one that will never be housebroken and for him I use baby diapers just like you would a bellyband.
