Beth and DE have given you excellent advice. I currently have a foster dog that's been with me just over 12 weeks and he's just now getting to a point where he will let my husband touch him...but only if I am home. If I'm not here, Harry runs from him. Harry, too, is a former puppymill boy and it is quite obvious that he was never given any kind of positive human interactions. Harry literally freaks out at men wearing ball caps and his fight or flight instinct kicks in...Harry always chooses flight over fight.
I've been taking him out in social settings (i.e., pet supply stores, Home Depot, and even to work with me last Friday) but he is still SOOOO frightened in new situations. He literally stands on his hind legs & wraps his front paws around my leg and hides his face, just like a scared toddler would. Just breaks my heart. He also is so stressed when in public that he will not take a treat, even from me.
Obedience training is a great idea as not only is it good for socialization, but also can do wonders for their confidence. I need to get Harry into a training class myself to see if that will help him come out of his shell.
One of our reps also adopted a CC who had "men" issues and it took him just right at a year to fully gain Chico's trust. Now their best pals. The way to most CC's heart is thru their stomachs. I find that none of mine can resist freeze dried liver treats (although can make for some stinky gas), dehydrated chicken breast w/some garlic powder sprinkled on it, or the Natural Balance food rolls (they look kinda like a sausage roll). They're easy and you cut it into bite size pieces.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
