I agree, it is not a requirement to let your dog get a tan but I would imagine that it is somewhat like humans, in that, if we have a light tan, we are less likely to get burned. Also, I find that no matter what sunscreen I use on my dog, it still clogs his pores a bit and causes blackheads and zits so I only use it if we will be outside all day in the sun.
