Larry mentioned a help doc which seemed to suggest a lot of flexibility in hard drive selection.

I get the feeling that Transmondes were designed to be upgradable, up-to-date and forward-looking, so although I don't actually know what the limit is with the bios on your XL, I'd guess that you would not have a problem with a 12 or 18Gb drive. And I'd guess that even if there were a problem, you'd still be able to use the drive by partitioning it into smaller volumes. Or you might fax or email ASE and see if they could flash-upgrade the bios for you.

For what it's worth, I have no probs using an 18Gb HD on my Vivante SE. Here is my bios version:
