Subject: Favorite Fanfic to date

What is everyone's favorite peice of Fanfiction to date - it doesn't have to be BtVS, it just has to be one peice of work or series of works that, well, is your 'favorite' or has special signifigance to you. Plus, you get to shamelessly plug stuff you like.

I'll be putting off sharing my own favorite fic until some people actually come out and use this board...

[> Fine, I'll jump. Think "West Wing." -- Singhue, 11:44:26 07/12/02 Fri

Okay, I'll jump in the water and pray that pirahnas don't eat me alive.

Currently my fandom whore-ish self's favorite piece is written by the awesome Sabine for THE WEST WING. (Oi, the show's fanbase is completely bipolar when it comes to fanfic. They either adoreit or can't believe people would mutilate Sorkin's writing like that.)

It's a series called the "Statesmen" which describes "Josh Lyman, in five parts," though each could be read a stand-alone. It's has everything (het, slash, gen) and is located at http://www.grapefruithead.com/ourboys/sabine/statesmen.htm but the best section has to be "Women," which is located at http://www.grapefruithead.com/ourboys/sabine/women.txt

I cannot recommend it more. With humor, irony, angst, women, men and so many other things, Sabine charts the crumbling of Josh with the character true to form with gorgeous imagery and witty dialogue. All of Josh's trademarks are there -- his arrogance, his pride, his concern, etc. -- and they are what are driving his downfall.

I love fiction showing characters completely tanking or shoved into the most dire situations (ex. apocalypse fiction) because that is when they are at their most dark and complex. However, often times you find that the character is completely unrecognizable and is really not the character that you have seen on the tele; they are whiny and bawl all the time or just Marty Stus who seem always accomplish the impossible.

But the really good writers just tweak the actual known bits of a character and then put them into those situations; they aren't above anything or completely bastardly about stuff. They just are. (coughjennyo'swesleycough) It's never a clean path to wherever they are going because their self-interests and common sense/conscience are at war with each other --- maybe they come out onto the ideal, where they are confident and heroic in deeds, where the audience wishes they could achieve that, or maybe they're just the universe's bitch.

And, god, those are the things that happen in Sabine's story which just makes me want to make Josh my bitch.

--Singhue

Okay, someone else's turn because I'm bored and want to read something, anything *good*, even if it's N'Sync slash. (shudders)

Favourite is a strong word, but one of those I most like
is the rough guide to HP fanfic.

It's more a metafic, and an hilarious guide to the
cliches of HP fanfic.

See

I'd love to see someone write a guide to Buffy/Angel
fanfic in the same format.

That was hysterical! I loved that they were able to squeeze in so many fanfic cliches! I know they had their description of some of the characters extremely (fanon) accurate.

I'm going to weigh in with some old-timers since my favorite Buffy fics are in the bookmarks already, so here are my old favorites, both are NC-17 for m/m slash. What attracts me to both is not so much the boinking, as the characters & how well the stories are written.

"In A Dark Time" by A. Leigh-Anne Childe, (aka Anna S!!!)
http://www.drizzle.com/~eliade/
[When I went looking for a functional link to this fic didn't know these two authors were one & the same. I've been reading Anna S' Buffy Season Noir & was blown away to learn she was Childe. Whee!]
X-Files fic: Mulder/Krycek slash set during the episode Sleepless. Even if you've never seen the episode you don't need to because the author goes to such length to make sure the reader knows what's going on. Explores a lot of character depth & interaction (seriously NOT PWP), set right before Scully's abduction. Mulder & Scully friendship. Amazingly hot, rather kinky m/m sex. Lengthy story & harsh in places, but that's my preference anyway.

1st runner up:
Dorothy Marley's "Rebound"
http://dmarley.mattachine.com/
Crossover between X-Files and Law&Order. Mulder/Ben Stone slash. I approached this one with caution because I'd never figured Ben Stone in this kind of role, but wound up loving this fic. Two lonely & intelligent men rebounding together - what's not to love? Tender and rather believably in character if you can accept Ben is gay & Mulder is bi.

I read nothing but BtVS and the odd AtS now and again, frankly I'm not too enamoured with any other television shows so my favorite will obviously fall under the Buffy category.

There are *so many* but I have to say the one that has really stuck with me is Annie Sewell-Jennings The Last Summer, there were a couple references here and there that I'm too keen on but I absolutely love that fic. I love it for its grittiness, darkness, nuclear holcaust, and the love story that still manages to believably get woven in. And I love the ending. Because it is completely appropriate if completely depressing. The first time I read this piece it wigged me out, the fact that I read shortly after you know my country was attacked didn't help...I could have read it a year ago and I don't think I would have been less affected. The link is in the bookmarks section of the group site if you haven't read it.

Okay I can't stop with one...the recently rec'ed Daemons Luminati...it's made a spot on my favorites list though I just read it for the first time last night. Sun also used to have this series that she took offline...she wrote it before we knew anything about Spike's past, she had this OC named Lily in there that I fell in love with, the story was all about Lily as far as I was concerned...and Rachel Anton's Geek Series...completely rules. And another nuclear holocaust fic, shortish, called The Bomb's Go Off by Rowan.

With such an abundance of greatness out there I can not possibly pick one...but The Last Summer is at the top of the list...because it is freaking beautiful in a really distorted way.

[> Well, My Turn -- Majin Gojira, 18:43:42 07/12/02 Fri

My favorite fanfiction to date is the "New Era" Fiction from C.L. Werner, set after the events in "Godzilla vs. Destroyer"

These are the Godzilla stories "Godzilla 98" Should have been based on!

All are well crafted and real treats for even casual fans of Giant Monsters - the hidden references might pass some, but are fun to read. and they come with Cover Art!

"Godzilla vs. Frankenstein" - http://www.rodansroost.com/rodansroost/fiction/godzillavsfrankenstein.shtml

Taking elements from the aborted "King Kong vs. Frankenstein" script, and the evil Hammer Doctor. Combine this with a terrorist orginization and you get this simple tale.

"Godzilla vs. Cthulhu" - http://www.rodansroost.com/rodansroost/fiction/godzillavscthulhu_1.shtml

Godzilla battles one of the great Old ones, in a work of pure geneus. True to both fandoms!

"Godzilla vs. King Kong" - http://www.rodansroost.com/rodansroost/fiction/godzillavskingkong_1.shtml

An Upgade of the 60's classic set in the "New Era", with special apperances from Gigan and Mechanikong. the evil Weapons Suppling Company MARS appears for the first time

"The Return of Rodan" - http://www.rodansroost.com/rodansroost/fiction/thereturnofrodan.shtml

A Short one, returning the sites mascot to the New Era

"Scourge of the Super-saurs" - http://www.rodansroost.com/rodansroost/fiction/scourge_prologue.shtml

The tale of one mans revenge against an unscrupulous military arms dealer (MARS) through his fantastic Bio-Weapons: the Super-Saurs.

"Frankenstein has Risen from THe Grave"
http://www.rodansroost.com/rodansroost/fiction/fhrftg_prologue.shtml

A Halloween interlude durring the next fic. Dr. F Seeks revenge on the Big G.

AND the main reason to read the New Era is a WIP

"Koumajutsu: The Coming of Bagan" -
http://www.rodansroost.com/rodansroost/fiction/koumajutsu_prologue.shtml

THIS is truely an Epic. A Sorceror, bent on the destruction of Tokyo, summons the horrible Demonic Dragon, Bagan, to do it - to bad that also means the DEATH OF ALL LIFE ON EARTH AS WELL. Bagan is truely a horrible foe - I can't do him justice in this description.

Bagan's decimation of the adult mothra as the younger watches should suffice:

"The demon paused. He had promised this creature great suffering before he allowed it to die. Would he grant her the mercy of a quick death? Bagan relieved some of the pressure on Mothra's head. The dragon looked about the landscape, his gaze settling on the ancient ruins that had once been the hiding place of the heart of the dragon. Bagan shifted his grip on Mothra, claws digging into her sides again. The demon lifted her and marched toward the ruins.

Chief amongst the ancient Siamese structures was a towering temple, its stone spire reaching into the sky. Bagan lifted the struggling caterpillar over his head. With a roar, the demon slammed Mothra into the temple, impaling her body on the stone spire. The demon stood for a moment, watching the larva struggle, vainly trying to free herself. The monster drank in his victim's agony. Like this, Mothra would linger for days. Bagan snorted contentedly to himself."

And that's only a small sample of the sadisdic demon's wrath.

You don't have to read past fics to enjoy - nor do you have to have scene half the films the series draws upon, Godzilla is like that - you can sit down and watch without having seen some of the preceding films.

In other words: If you read only one WIP this year - Read "Koumajutsu: The Coming of Bagan"

Why are you still here! GO! Read now!

Fave fanfic to date? Wow, you're not asking for much! I don't know if I could say such and such a piece is my all time fave because if I was asked next week or next month my answer would be different. What I can say is that there are a number of fics that I have read over and over again since I first found them (mostly through this list). I don't think there is a fic that I re-read that isn't in the bookmarks or the archive.

The only fandom I've really read anything in apart from Angel and Buffy is Gladiator. My fave fic there is a story called Echoes in Eternity by Robin Roberts which you can find at her site,Felixlegions.com under alternate endings. For some reason a lot of glad fic tends to be alternate universe :). It's a great story, true to the characters, if sometimes a bit shaky on historical detail. Oh and it's very long which I also like.

[> my two cents to a board that finally seems to have come alive! -- DeepaD, 05:15:12 07/13/02 Sat

Whee!
Someone besides me is talking! And nice interesting posts too!

Ok, as for Buffy, there are way too many to pick one, but off the top of my head, the ones that are on my hard drive and which I have re-read substantially are - The Last Summer (yep, Lanie, it is great), Moments in Time by Laure Alexander, Achilles Heel by Elisabeth, Margot le Faye for the most amazing smut... there are more, but like i said, can't be bothered to be all fair and objective.

As for the one fic I'd have to pick, it would be the Draco trilogy by Cassandra Clair. This is the fic that brought me into fanfiction, and it is one I wait with bated breath to be updated. I adore the author, I adore her novels, and if you think Spike is hot, you should see her Draco. The girl singlehandedly redesigned the HP fandom's wardrobe, vocabulary, and LJ culture.
Oh, and when it comes to HP, Alex, Barb, and Lori are pretty damn good too.

Good choices there, Deepa, but you have to add in Cairnsy as well. She writes some of the best Oliver/Percy fic out there - just dark enough to make you really care about the boys, and sweet enough to have you wish she has written some more...

Haven't read 'em - my only link to the HP fandom is my younger brother, so I haven't really seen slash or serious stuff, since he's pretty much a schnoogle fan. (except, of course, Spyke Raven's stuff, which I shudder in amazement at)
Care to share some links?

>Deepa D.

Ooh, I just had some. Let me find them for you...

A Spirit of
Brotherhood, by Torch
was the first HP story that I read, and I am so glad I started off with well-written... In this fic, Snape, Lupin and Black are forced to combine their magic to prepare for the coming war with Voldemort. Yes, it's a somewhat cliche plotline, but Torch's characterizations are just amazing. She doesn't ignore the fact that Black set up Snape to be killed, and she doesn't exaggerate their core personalities in order to favor one character over another. There are some nice moments between Black and Lupin that hint at slashiness, but the affection between them that she writes is gold.

Ok, this one has a fanficiton.net warning, so run to the ad blocker as soon as you get to the site. Tough Guide to Harry Potter, by Rugi and Gwena isn't really something you read all the way though, but it is very entertaining. An encyclopedia of HP fic cliches, the authors take the time to point out the current trends in the fandom with scathing wit and a bit of love for what they've read. I think they manage to mock every aspect of HP fic, with humorous results. Just pick a letter and shake your head, because you know you've seen examples of every single entry...

Last but not least, an appearance from my current favorite 'ship, Percy/Oliver. Cairnsy (scroll down, her personal site is being redesigned) is probably one of my favorite writers for the pairing, although it looks like she has some stories that won't be finished any time soon. Check out Playing the Game and it's sequel End Game, and As the Sky Wept for a dark look at the costs of love.

I'd also tell you to check out Iphigenia at the Oliver/Percy Improv (how many improv sites *are* there?), but it's so hard to find her fics and the order in which is should be read... Sigh. The "Portrait of the Wizard as a Young Man" series goes "Waking From the Dream (Improv 3)," "La Sourire," "Roman Holiday (Improv 2)" and "Flying Free of the Nets (Improv 9)". I have no idea where La Sourire may be, but I'm assuming it's at ff.net. Anyway, it's a nice series of fics set during the (upcoming) wizard war, and it's very intriguing, but she seems to be skipping around. It's driving me bonkers. The improv focuses on Oliver and Percy, but not necessarily together, so there's a bit of O/Marcus Flint in it, as well. James Walkwithwind has some nice submissions, as well.

Oh! Read this one too! Of Apples and Trees and None of the Above, by aMuse. Ahh, what expectations are placed on Oliver, and Percy tries to understand. Just a friendship fic, but very nicely done.
