Neither HD nor ED are diseases. both are physical conditions and are usually not apparent in puppies (although ED could be sometimes).
There are several theories about HD and its' causes and prevention. It is believed that if you breed two parents with good hips themselves you have a better chance of having puppies with good hips. I believe this but I am also aware that you can breed two parents certified to be free of any hip dysplasia and still get pups with the condition.
There are those who contend that HD is the result of bad feeding and excercise while the pup is in the growing stage. I personally believe that it is a combination of of the three-breeding, feeding, and excercise and if two of the three are done wrong the results will often be a dysplastic dog. You can find people who are willing to fight in defense of their own belief on the subject, but they won't be able to show you several generations of puppies that they bred that are all free of HD.
