People read books and trust everything they read. Many fall for the HIPE they read in a book , being blind to the fact that these books were written by less then a credible unprofessional sourses and consist of no factual data , other then fancy misterious history(his story).
Breeders are selling HISTORY crap left and right , without even attempting to performance test their dogs , as to see if what they sell will stand up to these historical accounts. So avarage Joe, without doing much research , goes to a local pet/show breeder and purchases a UNIQUE Quardian -Presa Canario, that will protect naturaly and need no training ( coming advertising tool in most BYB sites).
Then when time comes to test his dogs at a training place , dog falls a part and Joe is pissed off and yelling all Presas are Crap....
Reality is , only 10 percent of Presas will be able to handle serious manwork. Same or even less goes for Corsos , Boerboels , Franch Mastiffs , Bandogs , Alanos...and many other rare mollosers.

Good dogs and bad dogs exist in any breed. If looking for quality working dog , breed is not as important as BREEDER. Be patient. Do you research. Ask hard questions. Ask for PROOF. Look at achievements on a working field...

Even then you may not be lucky , but your chances to get a good dog are a lot higher if you do your homework.

Regards
