Well that, unfortunately, doesn’t fare well for the BB, as that usually leads to all sorts of problems with the breeds. The American Bulldog is a good example of this. I am not interested in the ‘next cool thing’, but rather a nice, stable, healthy dog. I currently have a Great Pyrenees and he is a great dog. I am familiar with working breeds that are, well, common – and even a few that are not. I was wondering what pitfalls exist when considering a BB. There is not a lot of info out there regarding them and don’t want to end up with a dog that cannot exist in my environment – living in the city, walking around the lakes, going to a dog park, etc.

To answer Sara’s question, as I stated earlier my pets are, first and foremost, pets. They live in the house, wonder around the city, play at the park, hog the bed, etc. I don’t live on a farm and need to drive sheep and don’t need protection from Jaguars (except maybe the kind with 4 wheels).

I like the look of mastiff breeds and have been interested in getting one. What I do NOT want to end up with is a dog that is fundamentally predisposed to aggressive behavior – like a Fila. I am sure that there are fantastic Fila’s somewhere, but that is simply not a breed that belongs (IMHO) in a city, as they could be such a liability to the owners. I really like the look of the Tosa a lot and, from what I understand they are really great dogs, but being fighting dogs I think that there is a strong possibility that even walking them around the lake in the city near other dogs could be a challenge (if I am wrong about this please let me know!). I do NOT want that.

I had a Rott mix before, and he was a totally cool dog. A great friend and companion. I considered getting a GSD or Rott and doing Schutzhund, but do not know if I am really interested in that sport or willing to devote the amount of time to it. When I originally looked at Fila’s the breeder I spoke to asked me where I lived. When I told him I live in the city basically said ‘this is not the dog for you because try will kill anything or anyone that comes into your yard’. To me this breed is clearly not conducive to city life. Is a BB? Do they NEED solitude to be kept? Can you take them to a dog park and have them play and frolic the way other mastiff breeds can (ie EM, or BM) or are they highly likely to fight with dogs the way others do (APBT, Presa, Neo, etc).

This is kind of the thing that I am interested in learning. The body of info on this breed is so limited that I thought going directly to owners would be the best course of action.

Thanks in advance.
