I cannot comment on the Boerboel as I do not yet own one and we live in the country so it won't be an issue.
Have you considered the Rhodesian Ridgeback? I know plenty of people that own and live with this breed in the city. They also hail from Africa and are beautifull dogs and great at guarding but friendly with people and dogs if sociallized properly. On the non-mastiff side, there's always the retired racing greyhound. Great couch-potatoes, terrible guard dogs!
