Definitely a 5 and 2 year old should NEVER be left alone with a dog. Especially a large dog. There was one American Bulldog, that let a toddler empty a pin cushion into his snout (I guess the adults weren't paying attention) without reacting, but this is the RARE exception, and not the rule. If that dog weren't so patient (and stoic) that dog may have been on the news as a vicious killer. Never let children rough house with a dog (especially a large one). I sometimes sort of "play" wrestle with my BB, but he knows I'm boss, and it's all in fun. I don't believe he's ever growled at me while playing, at least not hostily (he's done play growls before) Plus, my GSD (the alpha dog) keeps him in line.
Also, I wouldn't recommend letting children play such games a tug-of-war with dogs.
