Subject: Outdoorsman looking for a suitable dog. Need Advice.

I am looking for a suitable dog to accompany me on outdoor adventures. I am not sure what breed to get right now and I am considering anything that will meet my needs.

I plan on spending a lot of time in the mountains to hike and track animals. I am concerned about stumbling on a bear and being attacked or having a bear wander into camp. I know of Laikas and Karelian Bear Dogs that do protection for this kind of situation but I am not sure yet if I want to hunt with them. They are hunting dogs and make a lot of noise if I don't want to hunt.

My question is how do Boerboels work in SA and how do they deal with threats in the african bush?
How might a Boerboel would deal with a bear or mountain lion if it encountered one?
Would they be recommended for a situation like mine? If I want a Boerboel it is because it barks less thus allowing me to track animals. If I use a boerboel for company on my excursions I would tone those down in winter.

Thanks Joe
