Hi, new to the forum here. Just wondered about your biggest find ever? I've been piddling around with a cheap $200 detector for about 2 years. Not many places here in Chicago to go detecting, so I rarely get to use it. About a year ago my wife and I were vacationing in florida, and I decided to try my hand at detecting again. I went out very early in the morning while she slept and I started detecting on the beach in front of the hotel. I found lots of pocket change that morning. I also found some junk as my detector is not good at weeding the junk out. I had a bag attached to my hip and I put the coins and stuff in there as I walk along. I found a cheap girls braclet, and about 3 keys that morning too. I was making my way sowly back to the hotel when I found a watch. It was dirty looked like it had been there a while. I didn't give it much attention as I had found watches before on a few trips with my detector. Quite frankly it looked like any other wal-mart watch. I put it in the bag and forgot about it. Later on that moring I showed my wife what I found and she didnt pay it much mind either as we were in a hurry to get to breakfast and on with our vacation. I detected 2 more mornings and found a couple rings and change along with odds and ends. A gold herring bone necklace that had a broken clasp was my find of the week or so I thought. About 2 months later the stuff I found lay in a box in the closet. The watch said Patek Philippe, but I never heard of it. So it lay in the box too. My wife decided to go have her wedding ring cleaned and checked as per her warranty. She said she was taking a few things I found down to the jewler out of curiousity. I said ok, and that was that. Well, the jewler quickly dismissed the few items, but was impressed with the watch. He inquired as to where she got it. After finding out, he asked to be allowed to clean it and examine it further. He called later that evening and asked us to come down to the store. My wife went in the next morning and he was quite excited. He told her the watch was indeed valuable and quite a piece. He could not make an appraisal as it was against store policy to give verbal appraisals. She called me on my cell and I agreed to pay $65 for a written appraisal. Well folks when I arrived home that day she quietly slid the paperwork across the table along with the watch which sparkled with the new cleaning. I was speechless as I read the value amount. It seems the watch I regarded as wal-mart junk was actually worth $22,000 dollars. We recently sold the watch on ebay and the high bid was $17,450. Needless to say my biggest find ever. I've talked the wife into letting me buy a better detector, but she said I should stick with my lucky detector I already have. I'm kinda superstitious. I really am afraid to get rid of my old detector. What if it is lucky? Well, I'd like to hear aout your biggest finds too. I'm all excited again, but not too many places to detect here.
