No, the use of metal detectors along the beach is perfectly fine. State parks prohibit their use INSIDE of the parks. However, the use of a metal detector from the "toe of the dune to the surf line" is permitted where the park has an ocean location. The park manager has the final say over this rule. If you are spotted with diving equipment near the Mel Fisher ballast mounds, you are in violation of their salvage claims. I believe the boundary is 3,000 feet.
Most people engaged in this activity help to rid the beaches of bits of metal cans, pull tabs, and other debris as they hunt for treasure.
