The following quote is from "An Echo in the Bone" by Diana Gabaldon "Prologue" copyright Ā© 2009 by Diana Gabaldon all rights reserved

The body is amazingly plastic. The spirit, even more so. But there are some things you don't come back from.

Say ye so, "a nighean?" True, the body's easily maimed, and the spirit can be crippled---yet there's that in a man that is never destroyed.

[> Sorry, I know "a nighean" is supposed to be in italics, but I could not git it to work. Or actually I could not get it to STOP working. It would not "close" the italics. But I'm sure everyone just automatically reads that in italics anyway. šŸ˜‰šŸ˜‰ -- JamesG, Sat, October 30 2021, 0:08:52

[> I donā€™t know how to do special effects yet either, James, but youā€™re right, we do read it that way. Iā€™ve struggled with this prologue because I donā€™t think of plastic as flexible. It seems brittle and breakable to me and not something that would bounce back after trauma. -- Kathy in PA, Sat, October 30 2021, 9:17:02

[> [> Plastic meant flexible, easy to shape or mold, before modern plastics were invented. Still does, I suppose, but we donā€™t use it that way very often. DG, of course, uses language in her own inscrutable way! -- CindyG, Sat, October 30 2021, 11:49:03

[> [> [> That is so interesting and of course Diana would use the deeper meaning. I had never thought of plastic like that. To me itā€™s kind of cheap, breakable stuff. It reminds me of when I was a Methodist confirmand learning the Apostleā€™s Creed. We got to the line ā€œI believe in the holy catholic churchā€ and we were like What? And got the explanation of the word which didnā€™t mean the Roman Catholic religion only. -- Kathy in PA, Sat, October 30 2021, 12:23:22

[> This quote also reminds me a bit of the first law of thermodynamics - energy cannot be created or destroyed. So is true is the case of a person's essence. -- DianaH, Mon, November 01 2021, 8:06:34
