I live with Scrooge. Probably the biggest Scrooge in the world. I love my Yule/Christmas decorations. I have a lot of them. I mean a WHOLE LOT of them. Here is the conversation that transpires every single Christmastide: Two boxes in, "Isn't that enough?" "Nope." " I think that's plenty." "Nope." Two more boxes out of storage. "I can't believe it. Look at this. There's boxes everywhere.!" That's after four boxes. I have 32. There really ARE boxes everywhere, but I'm storing them until I take everything down. After box 8, David is catatonic. Foaming at the mouth, but catatonic. Every time he begins to say anything, when he tumbles out of his catatonic state, I lug another 2 boxes out.

We don't speak much for about a week. All will be well after I remove all the empty boxes from the entire living space. Two at a time.

Some of the standing stones were brindled, striped with dim colors. Others were speckled with flakes of mica that caught the morning sun with a cheerful shimmer. All of them were remarkably different from the clumps of native stone that thrust out of the bracken all around. Whoever built the stone circles, and for whatever purpose, thought it important enough to have quarried, shaped, and transported special stone blocks for the erection of their testimonial. Shaped --how? Transported--how, and from what unimaginable distance?

[> The Standing Stone Circles are so impressive, even at Clava Cairns where they are much smaller than Stennes or Brodgar. Are they older there and eroded? Were they smaller to begin with? It's obviously a burial site while other rings seem to be more ceremonial. Different clans/tribes, different emphasis of purpose, different feeling of something about the chosen site? The land around them has changed so much over the centuries that it's difficult to feel the same thing the ancients might have felt. -- kgp, Mon, December 20 2021, 4:47:49

[> [> Yes! All of what you said. Before Outlander, Stonehenge was my thought of standing stones. But there’s so much more and they’re SO old and different shapes and sizes. When whole civilizations get buried - how do they last? -- Kathy in PA, Mon, December 20 2021, 11:40:59

[> Really? 32 boxes? Please tell me they’re not as big as bins. I’d have to go with Dave on this one😳 -- Kathy in PA, Mon, December 20 2021, 11:48:09

[> [> No, they're not as big as bins. I am very sentimental about my Yule/Christmas decorations and I have 40+ years of gifts, and all the ornaments my kids made as children, and even some I made when I was young. I have quite a few of my mother's and grandmother's, too. Many have been gifts and I've gotten a few myself. It adds up over the years. Also, most of the boxes don't have as many items as it looks like because I wrap everything well enough that they could get run over by a mac truck and be ok. David just enjoys pushing my buttons about all my stuff. I'm sure he would appreciate your standing in his corner in this, Kathy, but I'm not going to tell him he has an ally. -- Betsy the mini-horder, Mon, December 20 2021, 20:02:01
