There is a quite common practice at funerals that has always driven me crazy: People (the bereaved) say all the things they never told the person while life was in their body. Who the heck is that for? I know the answer to that - I'm just asking rhetorically.

My friend's first husband committed suicide a couple of years ago, and at the service she read the most beautiful, heartfelt letter she wrote to him about how much she loved and respected him, and all the parts of his character she admired. All I could think of was, "Did you ever once say anything like that while he was alive?" They were divorced but on speaking terms. The divorce was a long time ago and there was no animosity left. I asked her about it and she made some excuse about not being comfortable expressing her feelings, which is very true. Quite a number among us have that problem - mostly when it comes to expressing tenderness for some reason. Less people have a problem expressing crticisms.

I, for one, do not want anyone at my funeral reading heartfelt letters over my cold, decomposing body, and then going off to eat luncheon meats, casseroles and jello molds at someone's house. Don't throw me a party the one day you know I can't show up!
