It's always hard to change or break ingrained habits. It sounds like you're on the right track! Keep in mind that attitude is everything - if you're busy NOT watching TV, as opposed to being busy experiencing other things, it will make the transition more difficult. "What we resist, persists." Focus your inner dialogue on how much you are enjoying these other activities, and don't let TV watching (an "inactivity") enter into your consciousness.

My roomate has the TV going 24/7, and when I pass through the living room to get the mail or do laundry I usually take a look at what she's watching. As I accumulate more time away from the boob tube I am increasingly amazed by the inanity of it, and not a little embarrassed that I used to waste so much time in front of it. I'm sure you either have, or soon will experience this as well.

I had to go cold turkey when I stopped watching. Having it around was like trying to clean up my diet with a five-pound bag of M&M's sitting on the kitchen counter. If it ain't there, I don't miss it. And now that I have a healthier habit, I don't want it.

And if you do find yourself still "sorta" watching TV, make sure it's a show that will encourage your other interests, like gardening. Just two minutes of one of those programs gets me off my butt and out in the yard (there's always something to do in a garden, even if it's just sitting quietly with the plants).

Isn't real life exciting?

Joe
