Subject: Was It Always Bad?

I have been pondering the question, "Was TV Always This Bad?" for a few weeks now. Though I don't watch anymore, I have to in all honesty admit that I kinda grew up as a TV devotee. But in looking backward I also have to admit that there are many instances I can point to in which TV actually educated me and broadened my world view. A rather small example would be the old Ed Sullivan SHow - It exposed me to many performing artists that I otherwise, as a boy growing up in a small Mid-Western town, would never have experienced, such as scenes from Broadway Musicals, Opera singers, and even the occasional dramatic reading. I can trace my love and respect for animals back to Wild Kingdom, Flipper, and other Nature shows as well as animal based series. The point I've come to is that TV has now become an "appeal to the lowest common denominator" entertainer. It challenges us less and numbs us more than it did twenty or thirty years ago. I can't help but believe that the "glass teat" (as Stephen King calls it) used to offer up at least some mental nutrition, but now only spews forth generous quantities of tastey but empty formula. Anyone have any thoughts/personal experiences to share?
