This might sound funny... but maybe it's just his way of getting out of working. He doesn't stumble in the field and you've tried everthing else. I had a horse that used to do it. What do you do when he stumbles? Do you let him stop doing whatever it was you had him doing? If so, you are rewarding him for stumbling. It's funny what horses learn on their own. Next time he does it, just give him a kick and make him go on. He'll stop.
