Hi there! We just had a bout with strangles with three of our horses and none of them had any swelling of the legs. our symptoms started with foaming at the mouth flollowed by drooling and abcesses forming under the jaw. about 3-6 days later the abcesses broke and the horses seemed to get better. This was the first time we have ever had strangles and it was a fast learning experience! I talked to 3 different vets and they all said the say thing: don't give them anything until the abcesses rupture. After they rupture then give Penicillin (spelling?) for 7- 10 days. If Penicillin is given before the abcess rupture, the penicillin prevents them from forming. The rupturing f the abcesses are the way the disease is "shed". Of the three that got strangles just the one QH mare looked like she wouldn't make it. Her eyes were cloudy and she quit eating and drinking and then the abcess ruptured and we started her on Penpro and she is doing well now. None of our horses had extreme swelling of the legs or face, just under their chin. Swelling of the legs is a symptom although our horses never showed it.

To get rid of it, it just has to run its course. Every vet I talk to stressed the fact that strangles is one of the most contagous (sp?) diseases for horses and that anything that is used on an infected horse needs to be sterilized or used only for that horse. Water troughs are the most common way that the disease is spread and anything that comes in contact with the nasal discharge could be passed to other horses and get them infected. They also told me that most healthy horses do not get strangles, it is mostly the one that are already run down that get it. Once a horse has had strangles, they most likely won't get it again. I was tolad that you should wait a minimum of 4-6 weeks before you put the infected horse back with the other to prevent spreading the disease.
Hope this helps a bit!
