Delee, yes, strangles is a terrible disease for a horse to get it is extremely contagious! So most farms will isolate a horse with this disease. The neck swells the sinuses fill and the horse has phlem building up, it is an infection that travels through the body of a horse causing edema, or swelling in various places.

It is also a disease that pretty much has to run it's course. 'Bute is like an asprin only for animals. It helps keep them as comfortable as possible for the duration of the disease.

As far as swelling of the legs go, like any stress or strain on muscles the body retains water to try to relieve the stress. Like a sprained ankle swells, it is to protect the bones and joints. Only problem is that the swelling can cause more problems than the original strain.

So like a sprain cool or icing can be of benefit, but one has to be careful not to cool the area too long.

Abcess is the way strangles is shed from the body of a horse. The infection gathers in specific areas and like a infected sliver, can burst open and drain. Some vets will lance an abcess to hurry things along.

Sometimes one trying to be kind to a horse with a disease like strangles will place them in a small environment with no room to move around. Moving helps keep the swelling of the extremities to a minimum. A horse's hocks and legs will swell just from standing on a hard surface for too long. So moving and being on a surface that has some give, like dirt, is good. Try standing on a concrete floor for an hour or two yourself and see how your legs feel. Your feet will hurt, your ankles will perhaps swell and your legs and back will hurt. It is something like a horse feels after being confined for too long in too small a space.

Lastly, the area you have the horse with strangles in needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Bleach is a good for sterilizing and rinses out of dirt easily. All areas of a stall a horse with strangles has been in need to be cleaned. Including the wood or metal railings. Leaving the area be fallow, with no animals in it for a period is also a good idea.

We at Red Ink,LLC have always quarentined new arrivals to avoid the possiblity of spreading sickness among our horses.
This is a good way of managing your horse's health care. A few days with little or no company is better than a barn full of sick horses.
