Subject: mare pregnant?

Hi, I have an 18 y/o mare that I just aquired. When we got her she was very underweight. Her spine is showing, hip sticking out, and area around tail sunk in and soft. About 11 days ago we were bringing her up to the barn when she passed a thick white glue like substance. Also when she eats or in the eveining there is a lot of movement in her flanks, and up near her hips.
She lays down a lot more the our previous mare who we traded for her. We have never had horses before and this is something I don't understand. Could the mare be pregnant? Is the movement we are seeing her breathing are something else? Also would her tail area be sunk in if she is underweight. When we got her she was in a field with about 19 other mares and most of them were pregnant. We were told she had been but that she had recently lost her foal, and been bred back on March 10th 2003. Any help you can offer will be greatly apprecated.
Thanks so much
Darlene
