It shouldn't be a bowed tendon. Is there any heat or is it just swelled like old ladies ankles? If he's excersized does the swelling go down? Some horses have what are called windpuffs which usually don't cause any problems.

But the fact that he's on and off lame would worry me. I wouldn't think he should lose balance that easily. I'd call a vet or even a farrier. Maybe they could help you a little. If there is any heat some cold hosing may help. Your vet may recommend some bute or bantamine for the lameness which will help with the pain.

I know in our area there isn't a good horse vet around, but they can usually help a little.

My horse has white hind hooves and black fronts. It's normal.
