Subject: Strangles

Hello to everyone. I have never posted here but thought someone here might know a bit about Strangles.

I have just brought on the New Year with our horse 'Nifty'. Nifty is a 6 year old Morgan Mare. Nifty has been suffering with a terrile bout of Strangles. She has been sick for about two weeks so far, and was so bad last night she almost passed away. We spent the night in the barn. Nifty has her own stall at a wonderful facility, and is lucky enough to have had excellent care. Nifty started out with her legs swelling up to the point where she couldn't walk. Her legs were so swollen they would expell trickles of fluid. Then her face swelled up to the point where her eyes were swollen shut. She looked so terrible but was still eating fine (she always loves her food). Her abdomen has pockets of swollen bulges, which are very concerning. To top things off she coliced Christmas day, almomst passing away. She was given a shot of Banamine for and forced to walk for 2 1/2 hours. She made it. Saturday December 28th she couldn't walk at all but her face was looking more normal. Sunday we got her to walk, then Monday, her legs looked much better with the swelling starting to come down. We got her to walk further than the day prior, baby steps scuffing her shoes along the isleways at the barn. Then yesterday she took a turn for the worst again. She had been receiving bute (possible bad spelling) twice a day for her legs, and antibiotics. Yesterday her breathing was heavy and laboured and she was expelling mucus and blood from her nose. The doc came out and gave her a shot to keep her airways open, a more serious antibiotic, and more bute. She went down sweating terribly and struggling to breathe. It was awefull, and I felt so useless. we couldn't get her up and it looked as though she wouldn't make the night. Then at 12:10a.m. Yew Years day morning she stood, and her fever broke. What a New Years gift! We walked her and the swelling in her legs was even down some more. She managed to keep eating hay but wouldn't eat her mash. I think she will pull through but don't feel we are out of the woods yet. Nothing I have read about Strangles says anything about swelling in the legs. Poor girl is very lucky to be alive. Strangles is sweeping the area, and we have had it the worst. If anyone has any info on strangles I would really appreciate it.
Thank-you
Delee
