Subject: Episode 110 By the Pricking of My Thumbs

I was hoping there would already be an ongoing discussion because I honestly don't know what to think. So much had to be rewritten to fit the episode that it was a bit hard to follow. The most egregious - imho - was the berserker Dougal in the Great Hall. Was that an act of grief for Column's benefit? He certainly got over it quick enough to smile at Geillis after Duncan died. It was too long and too weird. The beginning of the episode with Murtagh banging on the door while Jamie was *ahem* occupied was funny. But since it wasn't Diana's writing it felt very inconsistent with the other episodes so far.

[> I am easy to please. I think every episode has just gotten better and better. Dougal's scene, IMHO, showed his complexity; he loved his wife, but heck - he loves ALL the ladies, and his wife WAS an arranged marriage. I think all the sex scenes have been beautifully done, and I'm liking the extra political scenes we see. I just listened to the chapters in O yesterday before the show, and they used SO MUCH direct dialogue! Top that off with the "I said kiss her, dinna' swallow her," and I'm wallowing in Outlander heaven! -- Lady-Jane, 11:34:46 04/12/15 Sun

[> Still trying to wrap my Heid around this one it's got me riled! I have come accept it is an adaptation and they must make changes to move the plot along BUT what the hell this felt like IRA said we haven't had enough sword play so we must have sword play and there must be a duel let's write in a duel with no thought as to why DG did not put those into the plot and then IRA thought DG did not show witchy Gellis enoughin Her stillroom which IMHO is a perfect mirror to Claire instead has Claire wandering in the castle woods at night without protection just as he has her going to visit the Duke alone!!! -- BetsyG, 06:01:53 04/13/15 Mon

[> [> Claire going ot visit the Duke on her own was a stretch for me also but given the amount of license taken with the story in this episode I can see why. The duel was puzzling. -- kgp, 06:15:38 04/13/15 Mon

[> [> I'm been comfy with the adapt changes so far except for this episode. I think they needed to skip the duel, the dancing Geillis and the angry Dougal and give us the scene at the hall when Jamie was telling everyone the story about himself and the Duke when Jamie was 16. He was so funny, and had everyone laughing. -- conmama, 09:06:44 04/13/15 Mon

[> I loved Episode 9...Episode 10... not so much. There is so much ground to cover in Outlander that I cant for a moment understand why they add in "extra' scenes, like Dougal's breakdown or the duel. In the book, Dougal was notified of his wife's death, and left immediately, I believe in the book Jamie went on a hunt with the Duke so he could spend time with him and discuss his pardon. I believe that's where Jamie gets notified of Claire's arrest for withcraft. Quite a puzzlement. :) I am enjoying the show immensely, but am so happy to have read the books, multiple times to know all the back story and the true word master of Diana G. -- CarolSR, 09:35:27 04/13/15 Mon

[> I've tried to watch it twice, late at night, and probably because I was tired I fell asleep both times. Or maybe it was that, with the exception of Claire, I had trouble understanding what they were saying. -- Florence, 11:14:34 04/13/15 Mon

[> I've watched it several times now and I'm still confused. They did get the story to where it needs to be at the end of the episode but WHY they did it the way they did boggles my mind. The duel was pointless....why not have Jamie and the Duke go hunting? Im sure they could have created some action sequence there. And that is the only reason I think they make some of these changes....to add action. To have Dougal just receive a message and exit stage left would be boring...so have him go into a drunken tantrum. Though his tantrum was sort of dismissed when him and Geillis exchanged that look after Arthur gakked. I have to say that I wasn't happy with this episode. I haven't watched the podcasts yet, but when I get a chance I will, just to give Ron Moore the chance to justify the changes! LOL -- Colly, 11:55:31 04/13/15 Mon

[> I posted my 2c on fb yesterday. I think a lot of extras are what the writers think are more dramatic for TV, especially Geillis' woods thingy and Dougal gone wild. -- LadyBlair, 15:27:38 04/13/15 Mon

[> [> Yes Lady Blair I felt this was all about appealing to TV viewers and having to keep them and not book fans thanks for comng here I like that we have core Lady of Lallybroch members discussing here not that all are not welcome but it's nice without the masses and to agree w all my fellow known readers of the written word ! -- BetsyG, 09:54:22 04/14/15 Tue

[> Was Dougals raging and ranting just an act? It was spelled out that he didn't live with Morag so where is the deep sorrow coming from? There is so much ground to cover and we 'waste' it on the Dougal rant and the Gellis dance! -- PD thumbs down, 08:01:21 04/14/15 Tue

[> This episode made me wonder just how much time Leery spends following people aroiund and spying on them. She knew about Jamie's secret spot in the last episode--enough to remember it for at least 6 years, and (joining the books and show) seemed to have overheard Colum's plan to get Gellis arrested. (Remember int he book, Claire bumps into her outside Colum's study). Going long>>>>>>>>g -- Kim G, 11:25:50 04/14/15 Tue

Also, the show has Claire wandering outside to find Gellis in the wee hours of the morning. So we are supposed to believe that a newly married Jamie, who is new to the pleasures of the bedroom, is going to not notice that his wife is out of the bed in the middle of the night? That part felt a bit disconnected to me.

[> I think this episode is a hot mess as an adaptation of the book. Yes, they got to where the story needed to be at the end, but virtually _nothing_ that happened to get it there was actually in the book. I've had so much faith in the production team, but after these last two episodes, that's beginning to wane. The worst thing, as I mentioned after Episode 9, is the change in the whole Leghair issue. After making her sich an obvious villain, how on earth are they going to make it at all plausible that Jamie actually would marry the woman in Voyager? Haven't any of the production team read Voyager yet? (Yes I know they have - that was just for effect.) And I am really missing Donas and Wee Hamish's lesson in the facts of life. I sort of knew all along that we wouldn't get that, but to see time spent on the silly duel and Dougal's drunken rampage instead of the Hamish scene is disappointing. -- Bev in Colorado, 20:43:34 04/14/15 Tue

[> I really liked the episode and thought the changes were good choices to move the story along. I wish I could write a long and detailed post about it, but I am reduced to using a very obsolete computer until I can replace the laptop I destroyed last week. (coffee + electronics = BAD) They managed to advance the story a lot in only a handful of scenes. -- Shads, 13:05:43 04/15/15 Wed

[> I canna tell you how many times I have watched Jamie kiss Claire on the forehead... that whole scene was far more memorable to me than the graphic sex scene. I'm no prude, but tender, intimate moments really move me. -- LP, 19:16:09 04/17/15 Fri
