Holy moly what an amazing episode!! Tobias as Black Jack is freaking SCARY! He is such a great actor---I'm just completely stunned at how unlike Frank he is. Brilliant choice to give the speech regarding the flogging of Jamie to him rather than Dougal at the spring. And I loved all the psychological soul searching. I was riveted by the entire scene. Heck, by the entire episode.

I loved the pacing this time around. I thought all the changes to the book were well-crafted and integrated beautifully into the storytelling. (Although I still want to know what the very English Lt. Foster was doing in a Scots village in the previous ep and why nobody local said squat about it.) All right, I need to think more and watch the repeat broadcast. LOVED IT!!

[> I couldn't watch the flogging scenes (my husband told me when they were over) but man Tobias is unbelievably good. What acting. Just give the man an Emmy already. His scenes with Cait we're just amazing. -- AJ, 19:26:56 09/13/14 Sat

[> I couldn't watch the flogging either. BJR was such a cruel, heartless SOB!!! Acting is awesome! Dougal even warmed my heart a wee bit tonight. Only 2 episodes left!!! Does it come back in January? Anybody know? OMG, I friggin' HATE BJR!!!! -- CarolE, 20:05:48 09/13/14 Sat

[> I can't wait to see the interviews at the season break with Cait and Tobias, and to really hear how it was for Tobias to switch so well between psychologies, and what that was like for Cait. It's practically giving ME whiplash, so I can't imagine what filming was like! -- LadyStormwing, 20:07:19 09/13/14 Sat

[> Claire had diarrhea of the mouth! I kept shouting "Claire!" at the TV, I was so shocked by her foolishness. She came across so much less savvy in the show than in the books in the same/similar scene. -- Nifty, 20:09:38 09/13/14 Sat

[> I want the LIKE button! I cheered when Dugal came in and rescued Claire! BJR seems much slimier than I remember from the early things. We already know it is more than just cruelty, that I don't remember getting until later on in the books. -- Kel, 20:40:33 09/13/14 Sat

[> Best episode yet! When BJR walked in and got his first look at Claire, the expressions on his face...ho-ly crap. Even already knowing the story and what's going to happen, he scared me. Holy crap! I cringed at the comments made round the English officers' table, my jaw dropped when Jamie removed his shirt for his second flogging...holy crap. My favorite part was when Claire ripped the whisky out of Dougal's grasp at the end of the episode. I myself needed a wee restorative dram as well. Holy crap! -- MiladyM, 05:38:14 09/14/14 Sun

[> One of my favorite things about the show is the continuity between the flashbacks and the 1700s they are weaving it brilliantly and of course by now you all know Ron answered my tweet about who came up with the razor idea for this episode. I believe that for non readers each week there is just enough to help them understand the story and remind the rest of us what Claire left behind1 I am not very eloquent in 140 characters but excited to be chosen I thought the setting for the young Claire and Frank was brilliantly staged making them young and costumed and lighted gorgeous! -- BetsyG, 06:47:54 09/14/14 Sun

[> The amputation scene and the flogging were hard to watch. The scene with Claire and BJR had me mesmerized. His disaffection with war made me think, is this why he's so twisted? I thought maybe there is a decent man deep down...but NO! The real BJR roared back with the punch to Claire and making Hawkins kick her. When I read the books I pictured Hawkins to be older, not a young soldier. Dougal s "grind your corn" comment made me laugh out loud. Now we await the wedding and I can't wait. -- CarolSR, 09:40:23 09/14/14 Sun

[> [> I agree. I watched the flogging and the amputation with my eyes 90 percent closed. I guess technically I didn't "watch" it at all. Now, onward to the wedding night! -- shy gal, 11:47:11 09/15/14 Mon

[> Shadow - Ron actually answered your question about Lt. Foster in the podcast for Episode 105. They cut a scene that showed him re-shoeing his horse that had thrown one in the village - thus the blacksmith's apron. -- Lady-Jane, 10:13:56 09/14/14 Sun

[> That was BRUTAL. I wondered how they were going to get back to the book's plot, and they did it in an amazing way. Thank goodness for Jamie's comic relief at the end. Wow. Just go ahead & give Tobias the Emmy now. -- Susankd, 10:30:59 09/14/14 Sun

[> DANG. Tobias is good. This episode was chilling and I thought for a brief moment BJR was going to turn a corner. And then I forgot about BJR punching Claire. What a sadistic bloody blastard. Tobias should receive nominations for this... unbelievable. I could NOT watch the flogging. This Starz production has exceeded my expectations. Ron Moore is true visionary. One more thing, Graham is HOT as Dougal. -- LP, 14:29:06 09/14/14 Sun

[> The flogging had me in tears and then I was a wreck for the rest of the episode. I'm willing to believe that Lt Foster was at the village repairing a horseshoe or bit of tack and chose not to reveal himself as he was alone. The Villagers may not have said anything knowing that if he was revealed to Dougal and something happened they would be burned out of their homes. Thank goodness the episode ended as it did - with Jamie's line and Claire grabbing the bottle from Dougal. I really needed that tiny bit of levity. -- kgp, 18:23:31 09/14/14 Sun

[> My only "quirk" with the whole thing was the scene where Claire runs off to amputate and arm. The surgeon runs in and doesn't even question anything, just whips out his saw and starts cutting? He doesn't examine the guy, just takes Claire's word and starts hacking. Seemed very odd to me and kind of out of place. Otherwise, I loved it, especially the ending. -- Colly, 18:55:36 09/14/14 Sun

[> Jeez, I feel kind of creepy that I LOVED the flogging scene. Especially with BJR's narration. It was like watching Criminal Minds. The scene that had me turning away was the amputation---all that screaming just made my stomach lurch. I loved the way BJR slipped in the blood and the flaps of skin tearing loose---it was amazing artistry by the SPFX folks. (I knew Sam was fine!) When BJR talked about the connection, the tingle he felt through the whip....I know I have read that somewhere in another book (not DG) but I can't remember where. Cait was brilliant, but Tobias portrayed a perfect psychopath. Much scarier than the BJR in the book. -- Shads, 20:52:03 09/14/14 Sun

[> [> I 'sort of' watched it the 3rd time through. I heard every bit and that was bad, what I did see was too much. I have also been known to fast forward through Criminal Minds lately, too. My level of creep tolerance has gone down. I love at the very end the almost 'hungry' gestures and facial expressions he gave, I think it was when he punched Claire and the soldier was kicking her. Just really spot on tics. *shudder* -- TracyAnn, 10:15:41 09/15/14 Mon

[> Wow, that flogging scene was so intense. Inside -- conmama, 05:30:35 09/15/14 Mon

I grimaced when I saw his back before he started and had no idea that his back was basically completely gone when he was done. When I saw those pieces of bloody skin just hanging off that was so gross. I could only watch about 1/2 of the flogging. Tobias is extraordinary in this role and perfectly cast. The way he can switch from gentle academic Frank to BJR is incredible. What an actor! I'll try to watch the whole thing when I do my 2nd viewing, but not sure if I can. I think Cait is doing an amazing job as Claire and I can tell her acting is getting better and better. That punch to the stomach was so unexpected, even if I knew he did it. She did a great job of acting when that happened. Kudos to her! My only disappointment on the first viewing is that I didn't enjoy how Sam delivered the "virgin" lines. It didn't seem as humorous and funny as in the book and it was hard to understand at the end. I've been waiting for those lines since the beginning and was a bit let down. I'm probably in the minority, but it's how I feel. Can't wait for next week!

[> [> Conmama, how come I always agree with you :-) inside>>> -- HollyC, 11:26:46 09/15/14 Mon

I thought the same thing about the virgin line. Cait was great - really nailed the gee don't you have a girlfriend somewhere bit. She did think of herself as a little more mature than Jamie until she got to know him better (at least thats how I remember it) and they've captured that by showing her thinking her feelings for him are kind of 'fondness'. But Sam either mumbled, or swallowed the line, I don't know what, but like you I thought it could have had more pizzazz. I do think Sam might be intentionally bringing Jamie into focus gradually: first he's just an overeager injured kid, then a nice guy, then some mystery to his backstory in terms of being an relative of the MacKenzies with a price on his head. I remember on first read when Jamie tells Claire on the wedding night that there are secrets she and he can both keep, I still wondered if he was going to be a 100% 'good guy'. So far I think Sam has kind of been in the shadow of Cait's incredible acting - it will be interesting to see what happens in the next 2 weeks!

[> [> Well, I feel a bit better knowing its just wasn't me, HollyC. Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one who felt that. If I didn't know that line was coming, I might have missed it....not much pizzazz as you say. If he fumbles Oh Holy God I'm going to be cursing, too. -- Conmama, 14:02:30 09/15/14 Mon

[> I found the flogging scene very disturbing but I could not turn my eyes away from it. BJR just got so caught up in the whipping Jamie, he was truely psychotic. [> I felt like the episode was one of the best so far. The Dougal & Claire scene at the spring was great - the way he so matter of factly explains how he knows she's telling the truth! And I think if anyone was watching who didn't know the story - they would have expected Dougal to be the one 'proposing'. I think the writers have done a good job of staying true to the gradually unfolding aspects of the book: the unexpected (to Claire) dangers of 18th century life (best to not be so free with your opinions lol) , what secrets Jamie had up his sleeve, how determined Claire was to get back home. If you get swept up in the episode its a tiny bit like reading it for the first time :-) -- HollyC, 11:12:53 09/15/14 Mon

[> BJR really creeped me out with the lip twitches and such! Plus, the ideas Frank has about his ancestor and the reality of who/how he really is. Frank using his razor and it being a "oh my X great grandfathers" and BJR using it to threaten his aide. Plus getting the young guy (Hawkins? any relationship to Mary?) to kick Claire. Bad enough he is doing it, but he is teaching others the same. -- Kel, 16:01:01 09/15/14 Mon

His connection to the "beauty" he is making. URGH! That click when he becomes obsessed with Jamie.

And, it doesn't seem he knows WHO Jamie actually is - Dugal's nephew. He just thinks at this point Jamie is "the boy" he ran into at Lallybroch.
