Stop Press ! We are proud to announce our good results in this year's School Cert. Exam. 3 Wahyanites got 9 Distinctions and 2 of them also got Credits in the 10th subject which was "Religious Studies" (late Fr. Daly would have been pleased). 2 other boys got 8 Distinctions and 2 more students got 8 Distinctions with 2 Credits and 2 other students got 7 Distinctions with 2 credits. Indeed the whole of the Form 5 scored a whopping 185 Distinctions(14.3%) and 636 Credits(49.1%). This represents a hike of 70% and 20% respectively from last year's result and for those interested in statistics, this is the best year since 1992. 99 students scored 14 points or above in the best 6 subjects. A total 89 boys will be proudly wearing again our "In Hoc Signo Vinces" school badge in September.

Not bad, not bad.....

hahaha..

I have always been wondering why WY hasn't produced as many 10As as some other schools over the years. The answer sprang to me after reading your post.

If we allow our WY boys to take some other subject in the place of Religious study, may be we will get a lot more 10As.

You analysis makes sense but it is also an interesting proposition. For all those 10'As out there in QC and DGS, do they take RS as one of their 10 subjects ? If so it means while they can get an A , a Jesuit School student somehow fares worse in this subject ? Fr Daly wouldn't be happy about that !

Anyhow, for years I have never been excited about 10 A's but rather the overall performance. According to these years stat. I am rather happier than finding a 10 A student amongst ourselves. If half our F.5 boys managed eg 4xA + 3xB + 3xC , I would then truly think Wah Yan is a super school and successfully turn out sound academically taught young men. At the same time I would also like to see these smae young men well minded and sensible. That is what we have always prided Wah yan boys over a few other "rivals" so to speak.

Distinction or no distinction, I never give a shit. Do you guys think that the number of distinctions we made in the CE or AL exams has a lot to do with what we are today ?

I agree with both of you.

I would prefer soundly educated young men with ability to learn and explore the world independently to a whole bunch of bookworms with 10As.

Wahyan may not have the best teachers or results around, it is the spirit and the friendship which she gave me that I cherish most.

Of course, not all 10As are bookworms and in fact many of them are intelligent young people. However intelligence is not the same as wisdom, there are lots of other factors that could make an even larger difference (e.g. EQ, that was so popular a few years back and of course luck).

No wonder, with the exception of the magnificent Dr. John Lam, the one who got most distinctions among us fares worst today.

Lam of course I agree, you've known me and my opinion on that issue for long. However, since the majority of the boys have to stay within the sysytem unlike some more fortunate few, I would like to see WY beomce gardually more competitive within the same system and would prefer all WY F.5 boys receive a more favourabel treatment in general by employers recruiters and Universiity admission officers who can oly look at thier testimonials.

I have often amde funny remarks without any genuine intent of insult for the poor souls who fit my remark but the spirit I mean with my remark is worht contemplating.

"Those obidient class monitor types never end up as great successes where as the naughty and eye-sore for the teachers end up as something somwhat more successful" IAs I am making an open statement here I would qualify that this statement does not scientifically quantiy "Success". I would never demean a school teacher by suggesting he is less successful than a merchant bank director (providede the teachr is a good and sincere one). But most would catch my drift.

We all know who this "with the exception of the magnificent Dr. John Lam, the one who got most distinctions among us" refers to. Can any one tell me who among us fares better than this hypocratic sun of a beach today ?

My earlier stm certainly was not created with anyone in mind !

Toby, in that case you should learn the art of to be humble to be bold. But that's supposed to be a joke. No offense, Mr Sun of a Beach.

But I must say that I think it is simply wrong to stereotype top students as bookworms or class monitor type of obediently boring people wearing inch-thick glasses. If you get to know them well, you will know that they are in fact far from that. What make them great is their ability to focus and their intensity for success, this is the thing loosers don't have and this is what make me admire them so much. So again, distinction or no distinction is no matter, it's just skin-deep indicator at best.

Well let me join you a bit with my humble philosophical comments. I think to be a 'whole being' with a real balanced life, it's much more than academic achievements. Toby and I had the fortune (misfortune!) to be educated in the UK. I saw a lot of goods and bads while we were there. Frankly I did pretty well at boarding school and subsequently at university whileas if I remained in HK and I would be struggling like hell. Conversely speaking, many came out weaker and bitter from boarding school. The experience of living away from HK also widen my perpectives in life. These positive experiences were not in an education program nor they are academic skills / achievements. Being smart or stupid, high or low IQ/EQ, honest or dishonest, sporty or couch potatoe, witty or boring, religious or atheistic, earning millions or barely gets by, and the list goes on...these things are remotely related to our academic experience. I cherish most of all our Wah Yan experience and the WY spirit that lives on that bond our deep friendship. life goes on :)
