Subject: Heartworm Prevention medication

I have 3 Boerboels, and recently returned from the vets office. After shots, routine exams and over $500 worth of Heartworm Preventative alone, my dogs are breaking the bank.
I believe in routine yearly exams and of course getting their required shots, but how necessary is the Heartworm Preventative? Since the dosage is based on body weight, it ads up.
Just looking for people's opinions as to how many of you keep your dogs on a Heartworm Preventative, and how many do not. Thanks.
I can remember as a child, nobody we knew ever put their dogs on Heartworm Preventative.

It appears that many of the regulars on this board are very opinionated and can be harsh/quick to judge at times. I'm not looking to stir the pot, but just get some honest opinions.
