Down here in southern Texas I keep all of my dogs on prevenative. One ging to think about his how cold is your climate and are there an abundance of mosquitoes.

I use Ivermectin. But dosing is extrememly crucial and having them tested prior to giving it to them. I have 7 boerboels so it can get very expensive.

Interceptor is another decent one. It treats many parasites at once.

I treat mine monthly. Heartworms are very common down here.
