Many of us use Ivermectin (injectible, cattle wormer) at a rate of 1 CC per 100 pounds of body weight. I give it orally. I measure the correct amount and put it on a half of a piece of bread. Then spread a little peanut butter on the bread the dogs will gobble it up. Fairly cheap and effective.
I bought an adult BB a few years back that appeared healthy but was incubating heartworms and it was a couple of months before we knew it. Fortunately we were able to catch it in time to treat it before the dog would have died. Only cost about $2,000, (The invermec is cheaper. I get it at a feed store for about $30 for a 50 CC bottle)
