Deco there are many ways to shape behaviors, most serious trainers do it with food. That said if there was only one way there would be only one video. The reasons are many but the main reason food is used is because it has shown to be the most effective method. Here is some links to obedience training with a 7 month old Boerboel using food, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSoC6q_J89c That dog has since gone on to earn a schutzhund working degree and I believe he is the only one in the USA that has done so. I was just at a schutzhund trial with Julie and to my knowledge all of the schutzhund 3 dogs that performed so admirably in very oppressive heat and humidity were taught with food, and I might add those were some great routines not only in my opinion but in the opinion of the judge. That is not to say some can’t be taught without using food but I am only telling you what most others do use to shape behaviors. Here’s another you might find of interest http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHSLWIsN53M please note this is the same dog and there was no rewards given and very little handler help (body cues) needed in the heeling and in the motion exercises, and the reason is that food was used to indicate to the dog when he was correct so what was done by the handler was of little consequence. Understand that was a training video so much was left to be done before his schutzhund A. Norman
