I didn't write the standard for the Dogue de Bordeaux, it's the FCI european standard, so if you have a problem with the standard, contact Raymond Triquet in France, as he was the last person to re-write it. Complaining to me about it means nothing because I am not the writer of the breed standard.

The NABF is a club that works to include ALL arenas for the Dogue de Bordeaux breed... working, showing, rescue work, tracking, weight pull... you name it. It's multi-faceted. And all the members participate in ALL these arenas.

And, the recommended temperament test for the dogue is the TAN test in Europe. Although a CGC is nice, a TAN test more accurately sums up the dogue, and it's correct and most proper temperament.

The Dogue de Bordeaux is also not a fighting dog like it once was. And that's a good thing. However, it can still be very animal aggressive, swift and agile in a fight, and has needed the breeding it has seen in North America to help even out much of the edginess it has had in years past.

This has benefited the breed, bringing a more calm and uniform attitude, while still maintaining proper guarding ability and breed type.

In the last 10 yrs, breeders of the Dogue in North America have made more improvements in health and temperament in the breed at a faster rate than anywhere else in the world.
Alot of this may be attributed to the breed being of FSS status in AKC and the will for breeders to bring their breeding programs to a higher plateau.

The NABF promotes continued improvement of health, continued campaigining of the breed in any arena possible where it will help progress the breed, as well as the NABF consists of a strong union of people who are all registering their dogues through AKC & UKC, and are working to bring all breeders of all walks of life together, for a common goal.

So as to an NABF standard, the NABF does not have a breed standard. There already is a DDB standard. The members of the NABF only stand to uphold that and progress the breed forward.
The NABF is not re-writing standards. It is upholding a standard of forward progression and breed excellence.

So you were mistaken in your original assumption of what the club is and what it does.

I don't know anything about the Bouvier, nor do I care to, so I cannot make an assumption on what is correct or not correct, and cannot apply any similarity between that breed and the Dogue de Bordeaux, or the Boerboel.

These are completely different breeds, and have nothing more in common than a Beagle and an English Mastiff do.

As to a dogue de bordeaux not being able to perform any duties because it's muzzle is too short, funny, but my 7 yr old 110 pound 24 inch tall French import male Dogue de Bordeaux recently ripped a new a$$ on my 150 pound 29 inch tall male Boerboel, and the BB was completely and utterly clueless, and clearly at the mercy of the dogue.

The Boerboel had not an inkling of how to fight back & protect himself from a shorter, quicker and more "fighting savvy" dog.
The dogue de bordeaux had him down, drug him across the yard by his scruff and if I hadn't goten out there, probably would have killed him.
My boerboel had to go in for major surgery to his front leg, as his muscle and artery were badly damaged and nearly severed.

So I would say yes, a Dogue de Bordeaux is still well suited and quite capeable of doing the same job as the dog you have pictured.
At least mine are.
I don't breed the really large & bulky DDB's that rhasp and can't hardly move.
I always have and always will condemn oversized dogs in the DDB breed, because you need balance, and that's what my dogues have.
They have type, movement, good instincts and good temperaments - and THAT is the ultimate goal in the NABF club.

And, that is my sugestion to the BB folks who are worried about the AKC train.
Create a strong club that helps make an impact or at least heps guide the breeds future.

Michelle
