Subject: Boerboel rescue

Hello,

A woman contacted me today looking to place her 5 year old male Boerboel. The situation is a sad one. What was related to me was that the dog had been a friendly dog for its entire life, but does have a problem with grown men. Recently, after a stay in a kennel, the dog contracted an infection. A veterinarian prescribed a strong antibiotic and steroid. The dog then began exhibiting strange behavior. The owner called the vet about the dog’s changes in behavior however the vet insisted the owner continue the treatment. This morning the dog raided the trashcan, and the owner’s young son went to pick up a piece of garbage the dog had dropped on the floor. The dog bit the son. The exact details aren’t known because the owner was in the other room when it happened. The owner’s concern is first the wealth-fair of her children, though she is sure the uncharacteristic behavior was caused by the steroid treatment. State law requires the dog to be quarantined for 10 days after a bite. The owner is looking to place the dog with an experienced owner as a pet. If anyone can help with the situation or is interested in adopting the dog please contact me and I’ll put you in touch with the owner. The owner contacted the breeder this morning but since the dog is a SA import, I’m not sure they can help.
