Subject: my two cents on inbreeding and "designer" dogs

I agree with Norman for the most part. Though I believe, regardless of how's it's sold, most of the tight breeding is at least as much a matter of convenience as it is a short cut to "solidify type" etc. It's simply easier to breed what you have than to go out and sift through what you don't.

In fairness to the hard core working folks that do it, I know guys that claim to have lines inbred hard for the three human generations and still performing without signifigant health issues. But those guys cull big time; like keep a whole litter and kill all but one or two off with time before the performance testing even begins. That kind of selection pressure is about the only kind that rationalizes it in my opinion, and that kind of selection presure hides if not cures all ills to begin with.

But most people don't need or want dogs with extreme working potential or extremely specialized traits anyway. And in statistical reality virtuallly no one is goining to cull like that either, which is why problems flourish in most tightly bred dogs, albeit less so in "working" dogs.

So in IMO a cross is a vary good idea for most pet owners as all " pure breds" are rife with genetic issues, and all the more so in the " rare breeds"

As for whether the founding sires of the boerboel had issues...of course they did, there's no way they could be this bleeped up now had that not been the case IMO

I have and will continue to cross boerboels with a variety of breeds. And I will also continue to breed them pure to try and improve the foundation of those crosses.

As a matter of fact I just met a guy with nice Dopper stud that i'm going to take to a bitch or two of mine
