There are a number of concerns when keeping a dog, especially one of large body mass, on concrete.

Pressure sores and callouses develop quickly on concrete, laying on a hard surface stops circulation at the elbows and hocks and you will see problems develop. Unforunately, these dogs often choose the cool concrete to a cushy surface. These pressure sores do get infected, so much so that it can develop into an internal staph infection...Tashi dealt with this in a dog she brought in as an adult and she had to treat it with diligence for some time before bringing it under control.

Also, keeping a dog on concrete often results in their feet breaking down quite severely. Their arches will fall because the dog doesn't flex it's toes to grip concrete...and the hard surface is extremely bad on joints, there is no shock absorption upon impact. This is a double problem with a dog kept mainly in a kennel, because they will pace or fence fight to burn off pent up anxiety.

Sealing concrete is expensive and if you don't...the pee smell will become super raunchy and it's difficult to sanitize the area. Selaed it is more slick and you run the chance of the dog slipping, overextending and hurting themselves.
