it depends on two things, one the temperament of your bitch and two the trainer. Speaking as someone who has participated in protection training with my Boerboel I don't recommend it for the typical BB owner. Why? Because there is a long term commitment of maybe three years involved in this training and there are not enough trainers that truly understand this breed. Most owners start and for legitimate reasons and stop before the dog is clear on why and when he is supposed to act. That said if your dogs temperament is correct and your trainer is correct protection training will not change her basic temperament. But if the temperament is incorrect this training will be detrimental to dog in that it will put her in a place that may affect her overall confidence therefore she may react out of fear and not confidence. She may to an untrained eye look like she is protecting but in fact she may just be frightened. But if you so choose one year of age in most cases is to young to start this training. It is best to wait until the dog is mentally mature so she will be able to handle the pressure of the training and be able to rebound from the mistakes you will make as a first time handler. It is better IMO to concentrate on your obedience so you will be able to command a situation involving your dog. I do suggest a knowledgeable trainer evaluate your dogs nerves and her want to protect. If she does pass muster, being able to shut her down is far more important than turning her on. Norman
