IMO you can't use defense, a necessary training tool/drive in PP, if the dog is to young to handle the pressure that must be exerted if that drive is used and then proofed. I agree, balance is the goal but in order to evaluate balance all drives should be at there zenith or close to there zenith so if the trainer has to manipulate and or increase one or the other he can accurately judge how best to accomplish that without concerning himself whether the dog was to young or in the alternative just lacking correct nerve and or temperament. Given mental maturity, he can then correctly evaluate those factors necessary for him to do his job, and that is to make the dog better. It is now understood that the mastiff matures much later than a herder and this fact should be taken into account in any training regiment of that type. That said there may be some mastiff's that can be worked at two years or less but if the handler or trainer makes a mistake in judgement either because he just doesn't read the dog accurately because the dog was immature, the results can be catastrophic. Especially for the mastiff given there handler sensitivity and late maturity. This IMO is just to big of a risk for so little upside. After all training is ongoing so it is better to ere on the side of caution given the demeanor type/breed.
