Too much (too hard) defense too soon (too young) and you end up with a dog with problems.

Not enough defense (too soft) too late (in an old dog) and you end up with a dog that isn't serious or takes it as a routine game...and that may lose focus and be unreliable in distracting environments.

Balance the drives as you develop the dog to create a balanced dog. Increasing the defense in UNISON when observing an equal increase in prey development.
