As you can see the answer to your question has many different answers that really all depend on you.

If you're a breeder, then I would personally prefer to see dogs that aren't trained and just tested at maturity. You'll quickly find out if the dog truly has it or not. If it doesn't, you might screw him up even worse in the process, but it's a cull anyway. That's all arguable but it's my opinion.

If someone just wants some peace of mind when they step out the door in the morning and leave the family behind, I'd just recommend reading up on how to secure your home and get some ideas that you probably never even thought of because these things may have never happened to you. Eg. Putting phones in closets with interior door latches on solid panel doors. A little extreme one might say? Most people think having a protection dog is extreme. So it just depends on what you want. Dogs can be great but there are many other things that you can do to secure your home that have nothing to do with depending on a dog. Besides the fact that protection trained dogs are a long term committment, in todays world they're a legal liability.

Now don't get me wrong, I can truly relate to what you're saying and if you're like me in that you're willing to take the risk of having the legal liability of a trained protection dog and you truly enjoy training as a hobby, then by all means, go for it. You'll never look back. The list of things that could go wrong go on and on and more than likely, you'll probably screw up your dog somewhat and then eventually build it back up when you realize that you've screwed it up. Will he track? Will he maintain his grip during a barrage of stick hits or jugs with rocks, water hoses, leaf blowers? Give me a break.......who cares? Yeah personally it's fun to test for it and see what happens, but all I truly care about is whether he'll put up a big display to let you know he's there and whether he'll likely put his teeth on your ass if you're then dumb enough to come into my yard when my kids are there alone. I also need for him to be reliably called off when needed. You might not have a high scoring national champion protection dog, but you could have a very nice dog that you can rely on. It really has to be a hobby that you like because it's more effort and expense than what it's worth if you don't truly enjoy it. Good luck.
