I honestly don't know. I was able to tell because of the constant interaction and training that I was doing with him. You can see when the dog is ready because of how they're dealing with the work. Goliath was not ready at 18-20 months of age, but he was ready at 22-24 months. But every year since then he seems to get better. Some things have to do with training and some things are IMO further maturity. Eg. He stopped acting like a playful pup at around 3 yrs. Some may recall that I would call him Baby Huey because he was this big goofball of a dog that wanted to "play" with everybody. Well that stopped, thank God.

I do believe that a breeder would have a better idea when the dog is ready for testing rather than having a general number like 2 years. Since they have several of these dogs to compare to, they have certain goals and a direction that they're aiming for, I would think that knowing when would just come to them pretty easily and that it would be different for each dog. I don't know if that makes sense, but it makes sense to me :)
