I am going to add onto my home within the next month or so. I have a gambrel/barn style roof. I have a basement and a 1st floor. The addition will be 20 wide x 53 feet long. I will be using 2/4 studs on the first floor and the basement area will be out of cinder blocks. I need to know exactly how to come off the roof line on my existing home so that I won't encounter any problems with my roof in the future and also for cosmetics as well. Thanks for any help that you can provide.

I,m building a garage/workshop 20x24 with a gambrel roof. Which is the preferred/stronger way to build it: with purlins and ridge beam, or with gussetts? I'm using classic gambrel roof dimensions, and 2x6? 24" O.C.
